In one of our past blogs, we talked about the history of braces. What about the future of braces? Do you ever wonder what Orthodontics will be like in the future?
Often times, kids wonder if their braces will help them connect to the internet and help them get wifi/3g connection for their electronics. This is unfortunately still a myth but there is hope for the future. With new technology coming out as often as every day, who knows what the practice of orthodontics will look like in ten, fifteen and maybe even twenty years from now. One will only hope that we will be able to connect to wifi or use our braces to get cellular service.
There is one thing that is in the near future and was actually presented in a 2014 trade show. 3D printed braces. Yes, you read correctly. Held last week in Las Vegas, the show focused on the idea of 3D printing technology being used for objects such as braces, jewelry and even wedding cakes. 3D technologies, especially 3D printing, are predicted to be huge trends in 2014, technology experts predicted at the show, and the sci-fi sounding idea is now ever closer to becoming a day-to-day reality. By linking an oral scan of your mouth to a CAD/CAM, add a few more steps that only the brightest minds understand, and bippity, boppity, boo….a set of braces just for you!
The new technology will do away with the need to create physical impressions of a patient’s mouth prior to creating a brace or other appliance to fit them. Instead, it will all be done digitally, allowing for a far quicker – and less intrusive – service, how nice will that be!! No impressions!!
