There are many facets and specialties of Dentistry. One is being an Orthodontist… Enter Dr. Domann and Dr. Orfanos. Your Orthodontists!!
Orthodontists are Doctors who move teeth using brackets, wires, and appliances. But how do these talented men and women become Orthodontists.
Step 1: Go to college. You’ll need at least a bachelors degree before going to Dental School. High School and College Courses will focus on Biology, Chemistry, Health, Physics and Mathematics.
Step 2: Graduate from Dental School. You will be required to take the dental admissions test and score well to be accepted. Once in, you’ll spend 4 years doing classroom and laboratory work. Your last 2 years will include work treating patients in dental clinics under the guidance of licensed dentists.
Step 3: Complete a Post Graduate Orthodontics Program. After completing dental school, you’ll need to apply to an orthodontics specialty program. Most Orthodontic programs last 3 years; during this time you will learn about orthodontics (tooth movement), surgical orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics (guidance of facial development). You will also receive training in research methodology and teaching, complete a research project, attend conferences and prepare case reports. Upon completion, you’ll be qualified as a dental specialist in orthodontics.
Step 4: Become Board Certified. Board Certification is used as a means to demonstrate your knowledge and skill in orthodontics. The American Board of Orthodontics offers the certification to orthodontists who pass a written and oral exam.
Step 5: Become Licensed. To practice as a dentist or dental specialist, you must earn a license. Licensure requirements are regulated by the state and include graduating from an accredited dental school followed by passing a written and practical examination. As an orthodontist, you will be required to take an additional state exam.
